Its that time of year again when the annual winners and losers are announced by New Musical Express in the UK. Can there be any surprises in store for us?

We understand that Cheryl Cole is in the firing line to receive one of the least sought after music medals in the industry. Over 500,000 people voted her album Messy Little Raindrops to be the worst release of the year, even though it did well in the album charts. Interestingly, she will be up against Justin Bieber in this category while JLS and the Jonas Brothers will battle it out in the bands section. Expected to do well are Arcade Fire who are well supported and the Foals, both of whom have secured 4 nominations each. For best British band we will expect to see the likes of Artic Monkeys, Kasabian and Muse feature highly.

The alternative awards present some interesting debate, for example the 'best and worst dressed'? This year we could easily have predicted Lady GaGa and Liam Gallagher as suitable candidates. But who will win which accolade we wonder? To top off the award list Simon Cowell has been nominated as 'villain of the year', however he has stiff competition from David Cameron and Nick Clegg in light of the recent manifesto U-Turn on 3rd level student fees.

Now the big question is, who will turn up for the dong-gongs - after all its still publicity... right!?! The Shockwaves NME Awards takes place in London on 23rd February.
