Fancy raising some money for charity and enjoying a fantastic weekend of music and arts at Electric Picnic? Look no further than the Tour De Picnic!
The Tour De Picnic is the worlds first and original festival bike ride fundraiser. This charity initiative was set up to provide children's charities with vital funds. Charities that have benefitted in the past have been Children's Hospice and LauraLynn Children's Hospice based in Dublin. The idea behind this project is that Volunteers raise money and complete a 80 km cycle or 10 K run to Electric Picnic. Cyclists will receive their Electric Picnic ticket which guarantees them 3 days of festival fun including camping. They will also receive baggage transfer to the festival, refreshments on arrival and Bus transfer tickets home.
Brian McDermott, co-founder of Tour De Picnic said “ We are delighted that Tour De Picnic is now no longer exclusively for those on two wheels, and all aspiring runners out there can join in, in what is going to be another great Tour De Picnic! We are hoping to break last years participation rate of 700 people so are calling on all picknickers old and young, fit and not so fit, to come join us this year and as always its for a great cause”
Participants willing to take part in the new 10k addition to the charity will be picked up from the starting point at Tallaght stadium and dropped to Athy, Co. Kildare. Here the runners will make the journey from Athy County Kildare to Stradbally in County Laois. Again a full weekend camping ticket valued at 229.50 will be given for these charitable efforts as well as a Tour De Picnic running kit, drinks, food and baggage transfer to the festival.
Another attraction is that once participants have finished, the Tour De Picnics massage team will be on hand. They will be helping participants relax ahead of the festivals activities. Here Ice baths and fresh towels will also be on offer.
Since its inception five years ago the Tour De Force has raised over 500,000 euro for children's charities. Jane McKenna founder of the LauraLynn children's is quoted as saying “ We want to thanks every single person who took part in last years Tour De Picnic; for LauraLynn. We hope everybody going to Electric Picnic 2013 will consider partaking in either the new 10Km run or the 80km cycle.” The required fund raising amount to complete the cycle or the 10 km run is 380 euro. However this year Collegetimes.ie are offering a student fundraising goal of 290 euro for both events. This reduced rate is to make the fundraising goal more reachable for students.
This years Electric Picnic will celebrate its 10th anniversary. As a thank you, loyal fans who can prove they have attended the festival before will be offered the chance to purchase discounted tickets. This years festival will take place from Friday 30th of August to Sunday 1st September at Stradbally estate Co.Laois, Ireland.
Headliners include Fatboy Slim, Bjork, Arctic Monkeys, My Bloody Valentine, and The Knife. This years line up also boasts an impressive showcase of upcoming and established Irish talent. These include Two door Cinema Club, Kodaline and Little Green Cars. This year offers a host of Exciting electronic talent including Disclosure,Hudson Mohawke, and Irish talent Krystal Klear and Young Wonder.
With this project now well established we may ask what is next for Tour De Picnic? Swim De Picnic? Perhaps a triathlon combination of swimming, running and cycling? Only time will tell, but we wish them every success in their fundraising endevours.
